The people who don’t want independent LGBTQ+ voices to exist have had a very productive few years — driving people away from organic online communities towards algorithms and AI-generated content, promoting dangerous misinformation about LGBTQ+ people and censoring our stories wherever they can.
Despite all that, Autostraddle x For Them is still here. Autostraddle has been doing independent queer journalism for 16+ years and, since 2023, has been pursuing a shared mission with For Them to create products and media that honor expansive identities and celebrate authentic self-expression.
In 2025, facing new challenges impacting both ends of our business (including DEI rollbacks that have cratered the online advertising market — making our publishing arm almost entirely reliant on member dollars to survive), we combined our talents to meet the moment with something that honored our roots: a print magazine. Real, heartfelt, everlasting analog queer media that no algorithm could obscure, no TERFs could hack, no network could block and no government could censor. The print magazine is now the centerpiece of our membership program and is making a real impact in queer lives worldwide.
Your membership dollars make it possible for us to make that possible: to pay our small-but-mighty queer and trans team and to commission hundreds of queer writers, artists and photographers every year to create work online and in print that they care about, for a community that cares right back.
There are some added perks to a Patron membership (like the gift box for annual members) but honestly, it’s a level for those who can afford to give a little more. Your support helps keep AF+ affordable for those on tighter budgets, and goes towards our partnerships with LGBTQ+ non-profits that provide our products to people who need them. We couldn’t do it — any of it — without you.
